Dog whining, pacing and circling are a mystery to many dog owners. One of the first things that comes to mind is that the dog is suffering in some way. They are not entirely wrong. While the dog’s actions might not indicate a physical ailment, it often means that the dog is suffering mentally.

Don’t worry, this is easy to fix.

A dog that does not get sufficient exercise will have energy to spare. That usually means that odd behavior or bad behavior are ways that the dog has found to release that energy.

How would you react to being cooped up indoors all day with nothing to do? Wouldn’t you get excited and happy when someone comes to the door or when you hear voices outside? That’s exactly how a dog feels when he is left alone for extended periods.

Dogs are social animals who crave the company of others, which is exactly why just a hint that someone is nearby will excite him. His feelings will overwhelm him because he cannot get out to mingle with whomever that is. In response, your dog might whine or become destructive.

Dog whining, pacing and circling are 3 common behaviors that result from a lack of exercise. But you must remember that dogs need a lot of exercise, probably far more than you think. A quick walk around the block might be a lot of exercise for a dog the size a Chihuahua, but for anything bigger, a longer walk is needed.

If time or physical conditions restrict your walks, there are other alternatives that will ensure your dog gets sufficient exercise.

One excellent outlet is agility training. This exercises not only your dog’s body, but his mind. Such a course requires the dog to think constantly as he makes his way through the various obstacles. In their natural environment, dogs run, jump over things, dart under objects, and where reasonable they will venture into caves, down rabbit holes and through fallen logs. This takes a lot of concentration and focus which is replicated through agility training.

At the end of the course, a well-deserved treat and praise from you will keep your dog interested and anxious for more agility exercises.

If this type of training is not possible, there are still other things that you can do. Enrol your dog in a dog social club if you can find one in your area. If there isn’t one, consider starting one. The idea is to provide a social setting where dogs can mingle and communicate with their own kind. This stimulates the dogs minds and teaches them how to get along with other dogs. Dogs that lack social interaction often become aggressive towards other dogs and even to people.

Is your dog whining, pacing and circling? Is he showing other odd behaviors such as getting overly excited when someone comes to the door? Start by increasing his exercise and you are sure to see an improvement quickly.

Training your dog can be a rewarding experience for both you and your dog.  Not only does it put you in control, but makes your and your dog more confident with each other. If you look at it this way,  your dog is heeling, lying down, or staying, he will not be preparing himself for aggression.

When you learn how to distract your dog’s aggressiveness, you cool down the situation, then you can simply walk away from a situation that might other wise be trauma for you and your dog.  It is always a must that you give your dog a reward when he has calmed down.  A typical reward would be some kind of food that is a treat for your dog.  After time, he will start picking up that if he does this or that, he gets a treat, and that could be his motivation, consistency in this department will determine your success.

Trent Consultants Korea Dog Care: Young children are especially vulnerable to severe dog bites in the head and neck areas, and there is a correlation between cases of dog bites and rising temperatures, according to new research published in the March 2009 issue of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

In an evaluation of 84 cases of dog bites in children over an eight-year period, the authors found that most injuries were caused by family pets (27%), with a high frequency of injuries occurring during the summer months. While the reason for this is unknown, the authors suggest it may be because of children spending time outdoors playing with dogs in the warmer temperatures, or due to a general increase in the irritability of dogs during the warmer months.

The most common sites of bites to the head and neck were the cheeks (34%), lips (21%), and nose and ears (both 8%). Sixty-four percent suffered wounds in more than one location, with the average wound size 7.15 cm. Pit bulls were the breed most commonly cited as the cause for the attack.

The authors believe that by implementing more accurate and timely reporting of dog bites to local health authorities, medical professionals can be educated on how to identify trends and develop prevention strategies. The authors recommend a system for uniform data collection to include the circumstances of the dog bite (signs of provocation, adequacy of child supervision, breed of dog, sex of animal, spay/neuter status, history of prior aggression of the dog, dog restraint, time of event, patients previous histories of dog bites, length of dog ownership, location where dog bite injury occurred, disposition of dog afterwards, and vaccination profile rabies/tetanus). Furthermore, families should be made aware of the increased likelihood of dog bite injuries during the summer months.

All bad habits, including chewing, are formed when your dog is a puppy. It is must easier to train your dog right off the bat instead of wondering later on down the road “how do you stop a dog from chewing“?

In order to keep him from chewing everything in the house, you are probably going to need a dog crate to keep him in. You can’t watch him 24 hours a day.  If you just restrain him to one room while you are gone, you are still taking the risk that he will chew doors, molding, floors and sometimes even walls.

If you start your dog while he is a puppy, proper chew toys are what you want to give him. Raw hide bones, or nylon bones will work fine.  When he starts chewing on his bone, praise him!  Tell him what a good boy he is. 

If your dog goes from the bone and starts chewing on something he isn’t supposed to, bang on the item he isn’t supposed to chew on, and say in a firm voice “No, bad dog!”  Then move him back to his chew toy, and tell him “good boy.”  You always want to correct him when he is doing something he shouldn’t and praise him when he is good.

As he gets older dog chewing behavior will improve.  However, it is normal for him to go back to his old ways from time to time.  It is perfectly okay to correct him by grabbing his collar and shake him back and forth like his mother did.  You want to do this gently, as not to hurt him.  If he goes back to it a second time, put him in his crate.  He will eventually get the message.

Sometimes dog chew out of pure boredom which makes him anxious and when he get anxious he chews.  Make sure that he gets enough exercise, take him for a run, play ball with him, or taking him hiking.  If he is too tired to chew, he won’t.

Avoid playing games that could him encourage him to chew.  That would include playing with a sock or basically putting anything in his mouth that is a no no.  Play with him often, just avoid playing rough with him.

The key to your success depends on your consistency and effort.  With patience on your part, this will soon be behind you.  And don’t forget to praise and reward him for his good behavior.
